Neon Magazine - 100 Films You Must See Before You Die

Neon's 100 Movies You Must See Before You Die!
Or how I stopped worrying and learned to love Films.

Taking a razor to the face of the film list, Neon’s '100 Movies' carved a Chelsea grin of assured defiance. Eschewing familiar classics, the writers of Neon instead handpicked an electric and diverse collection of films, that shock and provoke in equal measure.
Published monthly from December 1996 to February 1999, Neon offered an alternative view to film review and features, over other popular publications of the time. One of it's greatest achievements in it's short life span was the creation of this list, which featured 100 movies - choosen above all others - that every film fan should, and must see before they shuffle off their mortal coil.

When I first read this list in the late ‘90s, I considered myself well versed in the world of moviedom, and had been steadily working my way through the accepted classics. This collection, on the other hand, left me feeling completely inadequate, as I hadn't heard of a vast majority of the films featured. Unfortunately these were the dark days before proper Internet downloads, where now a number of these titles find eager fans on a daily basis.

Titles like 'Naked', 'Blue Velvet', 'Kiss me Deadly' and 'The Long Goodbye', each one seemingly better than the last. While it also introduced me to a number of directors that had somehow passed me by, masters like Mike Leigh, Robert Altman and Michael Powell, these mighty men of cinema were now firm friends who opened my fevered brain to new exciting sights.
Looking at the films that populate this list now its hard not to admire the sheer bullheadedness of sandwiching hard-core porn (Deep Throat) along side 'Blacksploitation' (Shaft) and low budget gore flicks (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), as well as stone cold classics like 'The Godfather 2' and 'A Clockwork Orange'. As for the top ten movies, it’s a wondrous hodgepodge of talking monkeys, a voyeuristic serial killer, a man in a poncho and a rubber shark.

Supposed classics like 'Gone with the Wind', 'Wizard of Oz' and '8½' are nowhere to be seen, and that has to be admired. This isn’t a list of clique cinematic titans, this is a bullet to the head, knife across the eyeball, 'fuck you!' statement of personal preference. If you don’t like it down and dirty and a little bit crazy then leave, this list, these movies, aren’t for you. It’s this level of standoffishness that makes it so great, at the time it was published many of these movies weren't even available, either through being banned, censored or just plain forgotten. This was a time of VHS, where finding a specific movie was a personal and sometimes harsh mission, akin to finding the Holy Grail.
Over the years I have read, and re-read this article to the point where I could sound off each movie and the vital points made in the review from memory. Sadly my well worn copy went missing some years ago and it was only through the net I was finally able to finally dive back into the nostalgic genesis of my movie obsessive mind. If you’re a fan of movies or looking for an alternative from the stagnate IMDB top 250, this list makes a perfect starting point for the true movie aficionado. While the films are dark, dangerous and sometimes perverse they will certainly entertain, while many are brilliant, others are just plain strange and just down right shit, but hey that’s the point. Can you make it thought all 100?
